Graciela Casillas is more than a martial artist and boxer—she’s a trailblazer, a role model, and a true warrior in every sense of the word. Known as a pioneer in women’s boxing and an expert in multiple martial arts forms, her story is nothing short of inspiring. I had the incredible privilege of working with her on a couple of photoshoots, capturing her strength, grace, and unwavering determination. Let me take you through her journey and our collaboration.
The Story of Graciela Casillas
Graciela Casillas was born on August 22, 1956, in Bellflower Ca. Growing up, she exhibited a passion for martial arts and self-discipline. Her early life laid the foundation for her remarkable journey in martial arts and combat sports. Graciela became a world champion in both boxing and kickboxing, earning titles that cemented her status as a legend.
A true martial artist at heart, Graciela mastered various disciplines, including Filipino martial arts, Muay Thai, Kenpo and jujitsu.. She became the first woman to receive a grandmaster title in Filipino martial arts, breaking barriers and inspiring countless women to follow their dreams.
Graciela is not just an athlete but also an author, trainer, and motivational speaker. Her calm demeanor and powerful words leave an impact on everyone she meets. One of her notable quotes is:

The Photoshoot: Capturing the Lioness
I met Graciela through a mutual friend, and from our very first phone call, I could feel her magnetic energy. Her calm, composed voice commanded attention—it was as though time stood still when she spoke. We discussed her vision for the photoshoot and decided on a studio setup with a black background and controlled lighting to ensure the shots were timeless and adaptable.
When I arrived at her home, her daughter Allie greeted me at the door. Inside, her team was busy preparing—hair and makeup were in full swing. When I finally met Graciela in person, I was struck by her beauty and presence. Her warm smile and glowing skin belied her warrior spirit and ability to take down an opponent in mere seconds.
The shoot itself was an unforgettable experience. Graciela and her team executed move after move, blending strength and elegance with every pose. We worked through about 30 different setups, capturing her power and grace.
Back home, I began the editing process, meticulously ensuring that every shot reflected her essence. A few weeks later, I saw the images online—featured on websites, magazines, and promotional ads. Seeing my work used to spotlight her legacy was an incredible feeling. It didn’t matter if my name wasn’t attached; what mattered was showcasing her brilliance.
A Growing Collaboration
Our first photoshoot was such a success that we worked together a second time. Once again, the images were featured widely, further amplifying her story and message. Now, we’re planning a third session, and I couldn’t be more excited to continue capturing this incredible woman’s journey. Stay tuned for part two of this blog!
